History of toilet paper

The toilet paper that we use today was introduced in 1857 by an American innovator named Joseph gayety. He used to sell a pack of 500 sheets for 50 cents. British Perforated Paper company (BPPC) developed this invention in 1880, and by 1890 the Scott paper company of US introduced the toilet paper rolls.

Initially, the rolls were not perforated, and lavatory dispensers sold serrated teeth to cut the paper. Types of toilet paper.

There are two types of toilet papers for consumers: Virgin paper products that are entirely fresh and new, and the other one is recycled paper that is remade using oxygen, ozone, sodium hydroxide, and peroxide for whitening of the recycled paper.

The toilet paper company uses virgin tree pulp to create virgin papers, but they also use the hemp plant as well. The toilet papers used today are made from trees and chemical pulp by extracting fibre and bleaches like chlorine dioxide. In comparison, the recycled paper is made by combining many used papers. The used papers are brought together and deinked before being pulped and washed. Then toilet paper is pulverised and reformed into thin and soft paper, and at the end, the paper is bleached and scented.

The ingredients required in the making are hardwood, softwood, Oakwood, chemicals, bleaches like chlorine dioxide & sodium hydroxide, and water.

• Step 1:- First of all, trees are stripped of their bark, that includes softwood and hardwood.
• Step 2:- Then the wooden logs are carefully debarked with a machine to make out wood as much as possible.
• Step 3:- After the logs are taken out, they are surpassed through machines that cut them down to small pieces.
• Step 4:- The wood pieces are then separated in batches.
• Step 5:- These wood pieces are then put into a pressure cooker with other chemicals for approximately 3 hours. Because of this the moisture of the wood evaporates and mass-reduces the cellulose fibres, lignin and substances present inside. The pulp is produced from this process.
• Step 6:- Then the pulp is washed clean of the lignin and the cooking chemicals.
• Step 7:- Afterwards, the pulp is bleached to remove the colour. The adhesive binds fibres together should be removed from the pulp or the paper will turn yellow over time.
• Step 8:- The pulp is ready to mix with water and form a paper stock (Fiber: Water= 99.5%: 0.5%) The paper stock is then sprayed on screens and mesh to drain the water.
• Step 9:- Then the paper is pressed and dried to the final moisture.
• Step 10:- Then the paper is scraped off with metal blades and wound on jumbo reels. Then it is moved to the machine that cuts it long into strips and trims it in squares. Lastly, the paper logs are structured into rolls and wrapped packages.

This is the process of manufacturing virgin toilet papers, prepared for fresh use, and in most cases only once. Now, let’s talk about the manufacturing process of recycled papers.

Recycled paper

Recycled toilet tissues are made by removing staples and pins from both coloured and white leftovers. The paper is put into a huge vat known as pulp that mixes it in hot water with detergents to turn it into a liquid slurry. The recycled pulp then goes through a series of screens and washes, which removes paper coatings and inks and whitens the pulp that is later sanitised with oxygen-based products like peroxide. This is how the change in the recycled paper takes place, while the other 7 steps remain the same than that of virgin paper.

 

Is recycled paper an effective solution?

The recycled toilet papers are eco-friendly that saves natural resources, which is healthier than that of the traditional ones. Still, it causes no harm so that it is considered an ideal choice.

Eventually, it contains BPA; the production is highly inefficient; the process includes the separation of metal waste and ink removal even before the process begins. Also, it has been observed that the majority of the consumers use white toilet paper, and recycled papers can’t be whitish, which is less likely to be ignored by the consumers.
